If someone tells you to come up with a thought of your own when you sometimes quote authors,?

philosophers, writers etc. are they being disrespectful or jealous? I always make recourse to different quotes and things I think are insightful when I speak to people but I always think for myself and develop my own thoughts, what do you think? They know this but still they say 'come up with a thought of your own'..
