Why is the gas constant labeled R?

quite simply, every letter or symbol given is firstly given relevant eg V for Volts. but avaliablitity for the wanted letter will run out. if it was a small r then it would mean radius for example. by making it capital, we can have 26 X 2 the amount of avaliable symbols (26 because of alphabet) then we can also add the greek letters of course
