Why is Chairman Mao adored by Chinese people but hated by foreigners?

I wouldn't say that mao is "adored" by the Chinese people or even by the CCP. People in China usually see mao in the 70-30 way (70% good 30% bad). Even though Mao was a dictator, killed many people and caused his nation to starve, he did do some good things for China, like unify different ethnic groups and he did attempt to help the poor (though it backfired majorly). Also, many western heroes (i.e. Columbus) also did both good and bad things, yet many people seem to only focus on the good. Its similar in China. Those with more knowledge of Mao will seem him as both good and bad.
