Why does my printer give me awful results?

Replaced ink in my Epson CX7800 but ever since i can remember this printer always gave me printouts with splats of ink. (sometimes uniformly) esp. with black ink only. i make a copy and looks flawless but theres these splats or extra marks of wasted black ink. any ideas?
