Question about TV series Firefly and film Serenity?

I think it has to do with her chosen profession as a Companion. I think there was one episode on Firefly where he mentioned that he wouldn't be able to tell if she kissing hm because she wanted to, or she was doing it professionally. The movie implies that they did have a relationship of some sort prior to the movie.
